CHAPTER 14

Pubs and bars had already closed, but Club Spice stayed open until four in the morning. It was a very popular after-hours bar, and many patrons were more interested in continuing the flow of drinks, rather than the entertainment. That bar rush was one of the most lucrative hours for Isra’s club and I used the sound of upbeat music and the shroud of multiple conversations to slip in through the back door using the new keypad. Isra had only texted me the combination earlier this evening, and I hadn’t even thanked him yet. I would be doing that now, before my captors came to arrest me.

I used the same code to enter Isra’s suite and found the soft jazz music far more soothing than the upbeat thump of the club. The white fur couches with pink zebra-striped pillows were empty, but a steaming cup of tea sat on the coffee table. I made my way to his makeup room and found several drawers open in the vanity, as well as a dress stand with dozens of sparkling garments, but several hangers were empty. “Isra?”

He exited his bedroom with a red silk kimono with a golden dragon print. “Raven, it’s so good to see you. How are you, my darling?” he opened his arms to give me a hug. Just as he did every other time I came to visit him. He treated every moment with me as if it were a privilege and I often wondered if his devotion had left me with a false sense of what a relationship should be. Why hadn’t I been able to find a man who would treat me the way Isra did. I had asked him one evening and he told me they should treat me the way I deserved. How did a single woman reconcile that with the realities of dating? In the end, I hadn’t. At least until I met Cameron and screwed that up by dying. He had been really good to me, and I had enjoyed every minute with him when I was alive.

I’d been angry when I walked away from him, but how difficult would it be to sit with the thing that killed his mother? He had been honest about that. I had seen the pain in his eyes. A week ago, I would’ve flinched if a fledgling vampire tried to kiss my cheek as well. Hell, he could’ve thought I was going in for a snack. Cameron was the least of my problems and I would text him an apology if Rene allowed it before he imprisoned me or worse.

Isra’s arms held me, and the comfort and warmth were too much. I sobbed into his perfect silk robe as he guided me to the couch. “Oh, Raven. Tell me what is going on, sweetheart.”

I sniffed and wiped away a crimson tear before I could stain his luxurious robe. “Everything. Being dead sucks. And I wish that were a pun.”

Isra chuckled. “Surely, it is not all bad.
